USFS Summer Forestry Internship

USFS Office/Lab and Location: Three research training opportunities are available at the USDA Forest Service, Rocky Mountain Research Station Forestry Sciences Laboratory located in Fort Collins, Colorado.
Research Project: The participant will be involved in establishing research sites for a study being conducted by the Forest and Woodland Ecosystems at the Rocky Mountain Research Station in Fort Collins, Colorado. The focus of this research is to examine forest stands of a variety of forest types that have been managed in the past across the western US and study the response by bark beetles and compare these to untreated areas. The participant will be mentored in the development of sampling protocols in cooperation with other project partners. The participant will also be mentored in establishing relationships with other members of Forest Service Units to help select study areas, establish study plots and transfer electronic data.
Learning Objectives: The participant will learn leadership skills, how to collaborate on teams, and how to plan and implement a project.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: May 31, 2021. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.
Appointment Length: The appointment will be for 4 months; June through September.
Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.
Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Total stipend amount will be $12,672 for the duration of the appointment.
Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens only.
ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and USFS. Participants do not become employees of USDA, USFS, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.
