From the Ground Up: Develop the digital voice of the Cherokee Forest FS-USA-24

Support the new development of social media, digital images, website management, and online campaigns for a Forest steeped in cultural, recreation, and forest management communication opportunities.

The Cherokee National Forest has a newly acquired Facebook page, a webpage in need of a content management strategy, and a general need to develop content and strategy for online communications. This is a huge opportunity for anyone interested in digital communications strategy who would like to develop a plan from the ground up.

There will be an opportunity to develop both topical and evergreen posts and graphics and to research and recommend best practices. We also need to develop a digital editorial calendar and a plan to make further use of available internal resources to organize and access existing and new graphics.

Depending on the interest of the interns, there could also be opportunities to pursue GIS storytelling through Storymaps, but the main focus will be in growing our Facebook social audience, improving our website, and helping the Forest learn to use digital communications actively and effectively. Help us tell the story of this amazing Forest and engage the public on the work we do!

This position is 100% telework. Volunteers must have access to their own computer, software, and equipment.

Students should consult with academic faculty to determine if this unpaid experience will earn credit.

We are interested in your professional development! Opportunities will include:
- Deliverables for your portfolio like a fully developed social media and web plan
- A virtual panel with USFS employees around diverse career paths within the Forest Service
- Webinars overviewing post-graduate opportunities, pathways to hire into the Forest Service, and ways to increase your competitiveness for Forest Service and federal jobs.
- Opportunities to present to a Regional and National audience on the program and deliverables
- Connections with the Southern Region’s Recruitment Team to support job skills like building a federal resume, navigating USAJobs, and interviewing for federal jobs
- Mentors will provide endorsement of skills & recommendations on LinkedIn following a VSFS’s interns successful completion of the program/academic year

VSFS interns will be signed up under Individual Volunteer Agreements (OF-301a). All VSFS interns are required to record their hours worked on this project and will be reported in the Volunteer & Service Programs Accomplishments Database (VSReports), the Forest Service’s official national reporting database.
