Police Personnel Intern II
This is an internship for the fall 2021 semester and is for academic credit for a current college (junior or senior) pursuing a degree in a field relevant to the internship. Interns will start on or around August 23 - September 8, 2021 (depending on their program deadlines to start an internship.
Desired Area of Study: Criminal Justice, Marketing, Forensic, Humanities, Social Science
Desired GPA; 2.50 or better
Desired Student: College (junior or senior);
Work Hours: Flexible up to 29 hours per week
This is an internship that is for academic credit working in the Police Division.

The internship will be split into two parts; 60% will be in an administrative position within the Police Division assisting with clerical and administrative duties. The other 40% will be shadowing personnel in the patrol and investigative assignments.

The goal is to expose the intern to as many law enforcement experiences as possible. A typical internship consists 120 - 160 hours. Observations are limited to the sections of Patrol, Community Policing, Traffic Safety, Criminal Investigations, Courts, Communications and Animal Control.

The intern will be assigned:
  • Clerical duties: filing, data entry
  • Programming: creation and implementation
  • Ride-a-long experiences with patrol officers and investigative detectives
A written assignment shall be submitted to the Personnel Unit following completion of the internship (if one is required by school). This could consist of a copy of the final paper due to your school. A fifteen minute presentation will be conducted at the conclusion of the internship.

Strong foundational knowledge in a field relevant to internship; excellent interpersonal skills, excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse audience of County employees and citizens integral to the internship; excellent organization and research skills with the ability to collect and organize facts/tasks effectively; excellent attention to details; excellent knowledge of and familiarity with computer systems with demonstrated proficiency in the use of a personal computer and common software products (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint); ability to multitask and manage priorities; ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as a part of a team; and ability to meet assigned deadlines.
 
Internships are intended to complement the student's academic program so the intern must bring foundational knowledge as well as a strong interest in the assigned department's mission and operations and be prepared to work in a fast-paced environment. The intern will receive training relevant to the assigned responsibilities, clear direction regarding expectations and feedback concerning their performance. Interns will finish the internship having gained broad experience in various aspects of the operations of the assigned department as well as broad basic skills and industry knowledge. Internships may include extensive public contact. Internships may be an integral part of a team or may require the intern to work more independently. The intern will also learn how to work in a professional environment and have opportunities to network with department leaders and other professionals in the internship field.

Interested students shall be enrolled in a desired program or related fields and provide with application:
  1. One written recommendation from the college or university's internship program coordinator
  2. One letter from a professor with firsthand knowledge of the student's abilities and qualifications
  3. Two references from employers or professional individuals
  4. Resume
  5. Cover letter indicating why you are interested in the internship position and to indicate at least three learning goals related to the internship
  6. Unofficial school transcript, with GPA
Work Hours: You must have a schedule with enough flexibility in order to meet the requirements.  Most sections operate Monday - Friday 8:00 am - 4:30 pm; the exception being Patrol Operations whose schedule is as follows: Day shift 6:00 am - 5:30 pm; Evening shift 1:30 pm - 1:00 am, and Midnight shift 7:30 pm - 7:00 am.
