NAACP and PADP Joint Research Intern

The York NAACP Criminal Justice Committee and Pennsylvanians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty are collaborating on gathering information about criminal legal system policies and practices and their impact on minority communities. This will include charging practices, use of cash bail, incarceration for nonpayment of fines or fees, using the threat of seeking a seeking a death sentence as a bargaining tool. Data aren't maintained in a uniform way across departments and across the state so step one will be to document where and by whom various data are kept. Data will be drawn from multiple sources, including online, phone, and if conditions permit, in-person. While transmission rate of COVID-19 remains high, all work, including meetings, will be done remotely.

Supervision is done by the Chair of the NAACP York Criminal Justice Committee who is also the Executive Director of PADP. From time-to-time, students will also meet with the criminal defense and civil rights attorney and the Youth Counselor in the County Youth Services, both of whom serve on the criminal justice committee.

We use the Google Workspace suite of apps. Students will need to create a gmail account if they don't already have one. We will meet via zoom at least once for each four hours that a student devotes to the project. We use google sheets to track assignments and exchange information without having to wait for our next meeting.
Interns should possess strong organizational skills, the ability to work both independently and as part of a team, and tenacity. A minimum of four hours/week is required and we have enough important and meaningful work to keep interns engaged for up to 12 hours/week.
